Internships & Fellowships


Internships are a great way to gain experience in public health. Below is a list of internships in alphabetical order offered annually by various public health organizations.

Internships for Public Health Graduate Students

AIDS Foundation of Chicago

  • Unpaid internships offered throughout the year, the minimum requirement is 15 hours/week
  • Application deadlines vary

AIDS United The Pedro Zamora Public Policy Fellowship

  • 30 hours per week for 8-26 weeks and includes a stipend
  • Fall, spring, and summer internships available
  • Estimated summer application deadline: March 15

Alliance for Health Policy

  • Internships may be available in Washington, DC for summer, fall or spring


  • Summer internship program in Stamford, CT with internships in Global Programs, Development, Communications
  • Eligible for a modest stipend payment
  • Summer internship application available in January

ASPPH Public Health Internship

  • Paid 10-week summer internship program in Washington, DC
  • Application opens in February

CDC Summer Graduate Environmental Health Internship (GEH)

  • Paid, nine-week summer internship
  • US Citizenship or Permanent Resident with green card required
  • Application deadline is in November

Duke University Sanford School of Public Policy Global Health Fellows Program

  • Program components include a required five-day intensive course on “Health Policy in a Globalizing World” and placement in a health policy-related internship in Geneva
  • The program is from May-August
  • Application deadline: November 24, 2014, at 11:59 PM Eastern Standard Tim

U.S. FDA Office of Policy Internships

  • Apply in December for a summer internship, April for a fall internship, and August for a spring internship

HRSA Public Health Internship Program

  • Unpaid internship offered each semester

HRTP: A Public Health Internship Program at the NYC Health Department

  • Unpaid internships are offered summer, spring, and fall
  • Application deadline is February 15 for summer internships

Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai International Exchange Program for Minority Students

  • Paid summer research experience for underrepresented minorities in the health sciences as per NIH definition
  • Application deadline is January 31

IMPAQ  International

  • Paid internships with research experience in economics, health policy, social policy, public policy, or related field

James A. Ferguson Emerging Infectious Diseases Fellowship Program

  • A CDC-funded, nine-week summer program providing educational and professional development opportunities for fellows interested in infectious diseases research and health disparities
  • Applications for Summer 2019 will open November 1st, 2018

Lupus Foundation of America Gina M. Finzi Memorial Student Summer Fellowship Program

  • Paid summer opportunity
  • Application opens in January and the estimated application deadline is March

Mayo Clinic Biomedical Statistics and Informatics Internship

  • Paid summer internship in Rochester, MN for a minimum of 10 weeks
  • Application opens in mid-December and closes in early January Internships in Public Health

NIH Pathways Internship Program

  • U.S. citizen, national or legal permanent resident. Non-citizens may apply

NIH Summer Internship Program in Biomedical Research

  • Paid summer internships mostly in Bethesda, MD
  • The application is available mid-November through March 1

NCI Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics Summer Research Internship

  • Paid 8-10 summer internship in Rockville, MD
  • The application process begins in mid-November and ends on March 1

Occupational Health Internship Program

  • 9 week, paid summer internship dedicated to helping students learn more about the field of occupational safety and health (OSH) from those most at stake: working people
  • Sites in New York City, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Diego, and the San Francisco Bay Area
  • Estimated application deadline is mid-March

Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OIRA)

  • Unpaid internship located in Washington, DC
  • Applications accepted on a rolling basis

Office of Inspector General, Student Volunteer Internship Program

  • In the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services
  • Unpaid internship opportunities are available at OI Headquarters and all Regional Office and Field Office locations (more than 70 locations)

Pan American Health Organization (PAHO)

  • Must speak English, Spanish, Portuguese, and/or French
  • Summer internship application available Dec. 1 – Jan. 31

Real-World Exposure and Advocacy in Community Health (REACH) Summer Internship Program

  • 9-week paid summer internship program in Oakland, CA
  • Fluency in an Asian language is required, with priority for Cantonese, Mandarin, Vietnamese, Cambodian, and Korean
  • Apply by mid-March

UMass Amherst Internships, Practicums, and Volunteer Experiences

  • UMass Amherst School of Public Health and Health Sciences posts internship opportunities in Massachusetts and other locations

WHO Internships at Headquarters

  • Unpaid, 6 – 24 week full-time internships
  • Summer internship applications accepted in February, winter internship applications accepted in November



The word Fellowship is used to describe different types of professional training and scholarship opportunities. Many fellowships are programs designed to launch the careers of new professionals. Some have rotations through various departments and often include professional development opportunities. Typically, fellowships are for recent Master’s level graduates and the salary and benefits are comparable to other entry level jobs. Fellowships are competitive, and application deadlines may be early.

ACHE (American College of Healthcare Executives) Directory of Postgraduate Administrative Fellowships

  • Provides students and early careerists with a list of available postgraduate administrative fellowships

amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research The Allan Rosenfield, M.D., HIV/AIDS Public Policy Fellowship Program

  • Paid fellowship up to 6 months in Washington, DC

Applied Public Health Informatics Fellowship (affiliated with CDC, CSTE, ASTHO, and PHII)

  • Created to meet the nation’s increasing and urgent need for applied public health informatics workforce capacity in state and local health departments
  • Application opens in November, closes in March
  • U.S. citizenship or permanent residency required

APTR- CDC Preventive Medicine and Public Health Fellowship Program

  • One Year Fellowship where fellows gain leadership experience in public health practice and policy, access to state-of-the-art technology and national databases, and train with leading experts in the field of preventive medicine and public health

ASPPH Fellowships

Brigham and Women’s Hospital Deland Fellowship in Health Care and Society

  • One-year administrative experience which prepares professionals to be leaders of health care institutions
  • Application deadline is typically in September or October and the fellowship is the following July – June

Catholic Relief Services’ International Development Fellows Program (IDFP)

  • Professional proficiency in French, Spanish, Arabic, or Portuguese. French preferred
  • One year international program
  • Application available in October, Apply by December to start early September
  • For those interested in a career in international relief and development, the fellowship is an opportunity to increase their overseas experience

CDC Career Training Fellowships

Department of Homeland Security, Secretary’s Honors Program (SHP)

  • Various fellowships including Emergency Management Fellows

Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL) Fellowships

  • One year programs for master’s level and two years for doctoral level
  • Designed to prepare scientists for careers in public health laboratories
  • Application deadline is typically in February and the fellowship begins the following August

Fulbright U.S. Student Program

  • The Fulbright U.S. Student Program is the largest U.S. exchange program offering opportunities for students and young professionals to undertake international graduate study, advanced research, university teaching, and primary and secondary school teaching worldwide
  • UM student Fulbright applicants must apply by the campus deadline

Fulbright-Fogarty Awards in Public Health

Leland International Hunger Fellows Program

  • Two-year program that combines field and policy work, one of the issues relating to food security fellows focus on is maternal and child nutrition
  • Apply to a specific placement position, Application deadline in early January, Fellowship is from September – August

Mayo Clinic Administrative Fellowship

  • Post-graduate fellowship beginning in July and consisting of 6-8 rotations throughout Mayo Clinic, position is posted in August and applications are due mid-September

National Biosafety and Biocontainment Fellowship Program (NBBTP)

  • Two-Year Fellowship Program in Bethesda, MD
  • Partnership between the Division of Occupational Health and Safety (DOHS) and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) at the National Institutes of Health
  • Rare opportunity for individuals seeking work in high containment facilities to receive professional training in biosafety and biocontainment at one of the foremost biomedical research centers in the world
  • Applications due in July, fellowship begins in January at NIH Bethesda campus
  • U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or a national of the United States

NCHS/AcademyHealth Health Policy Fellowship

  • 13 months with National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) in Hyattsville, MD, apply by early January

NIMH  Interdisciplinary   HIV  Prevention Training Program

  • Pre and postdoctoral fellows, affiliated with Yale University

ORAU  (Oak Ridge Associated Universities) Graduate Student Research Opportunities

  • As a consortium of major Ph.D.–granting academic institutions, ORAU cultivates collaborative partnerships that enhance the scientific research and education enterprise of our nation.

ORISE Fellowships with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

  • The ORISE Research Participation Programs at the CDC accept applications from students, recent graduates, and faculty researchers year round.

PHI/CDC Global Health Fellowship Program

  • The PHI/CDC Global Health Fellowship Program is a U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention-funded program that offers recent global public health graduates from Council on Education in Public Health accredited schools and programs the exciting opportunity to participate in yearlong fellowships with guidance from leading global health experts from the CDC.

PMF (Presidential Management Fellows) Program

  • The PMF Program is the flagship leadership development program with the United States federal government, and it is very competitive
  • Application information is available beginning in the summer, and the application opens in the beginning of November and closes 3 weeks later

State Policy Fellowship Program

  • Two-year program affiliated with State Fiscal Analysis Initiative (SFAI) where State Policy Fellows tackle domestic policy challenges in areas like health care, taxes, anti-poverty policy, education and public safety

Wisconsin Population Health Service Fellowship Program

  • Two-year fellowship beginning in July 2014 and ending in July 2016
  • Fellows receive competitive salary, health insurance, and excellent salary-related benefits
