Besides having your own car, Miami has several options for getting around town, to the airport, and to the beaches.
PARKING ON THE UM MEDICAL CAMPUS
Students can purchase campus parking at the Security and Parking Office located at 1501 NW 9 Avenue, Suite 100, Miami, FL 33136. You must show UM identification (Cane Card). Please call (305) 243-2430 for more information.
TRANSPORTATION TO MIAMI
Miami International Airport (MIA) is served directly by shuttle, bus, and taxi. Public transportation is also available for travel both to and from the airport on several bus lines and the Metrorail Orange Line.
Miami Beach Airport Flyer
Runs every 30 minutes from 6:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., daily. Only $2.35 each way. Buses are equipped with luggage racks and free Wi-Fi.
Super Shuttle
Shared-ride shuttle service with door-to-door service to MIA and Fort Lauderdale International Airport.
PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION
Metrorail
An elevated train line provides service to Miami International Airport (MIA) and runs from Kendall through South Miami, Coral Gables, and downtown Miami; to the Civic Center/Jackson Memorial Hospital area; and to Brownsville, Liberty City, Hialeah, and Medley in northwest Miami-Dade, with connections to Broward and Palm Beach counties at the Tri-Rail/Metrorail transfer station. The Metrorail operates from 5 a.m. to midnight seven days a week. Cost per trip is $2.25. To ride Metrorail, you will need a transit pass as the fare gates do not accept cash. Students can purchase discounted transit passes at the Security and Parking Office located at 1501 NW 9 Avenue, Suite 100, Miami, FL 33136.
Metrobus
$2.25 per trip. Several bus routes operate 24 hours a day and three routes provide overnight service between 11:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. See individual route schedules for hours of operations. EASY Card, EASY Ticket, and cash (no pennies) are all acceptable forms of payment.
Metromover
Free. Operates from 5:00 a.m. to midnight seven days a week. There are several different loops (Omni Loop, Brickell Loop, and Inner Loop) that cover most of downtown Miami. Metromover cars arrive every 90 seconds during rush hours and every three minutes during off-peak hours.
Tri-Rail
Rail service between Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach.
Coral Gables Trolley
Free. Service runs along Ponce de Leon Boulevard from the Douglas Metrorail Station to Flagler Street. It runs every 10 to 15 minutes Monday to Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., except the first Friday of the month when it runs until 10:00 p.m.
Miami Trolley
Free trolley service around downtown Miami, Brickell, Overtown, and the UM Medical Campus at the Health District.
CAR SHARING SERVICES
For those that want an alternative to regular car rentals or car ownership, car sharing is a model of car rental where people rent cars for short periods of time, often by the hour. They are attractive to customers who make only occasional use of a vehicle, as well as others who would like occasional access to a vehicle of a different type than they use day-to-day and generally gas and insurance are included. BIKING
This section is intended for those of you considering the use of a bike as a primary method of transportation in the city.
Biking in Miami is possible. You just need to be very careful and take all safety precautions. You must observe all traffic laws while riding your bike. When riding at night, Florida law requires lights on the front (white) and rear (red) of your bike. It’s recommended that you wear a helmet (required for children under 16) and bright or reflective clothes for visibility. You will also need a good bike lock.
There are two ways to bike and ride on Metrorail. You can ride Metrorail with your bike or store your bike in a locker before boarding the train. If you choose to take your bike with you, just pay your Metrorail fare, roll your bike through the handicap gate, and take the elevator to the platform. All Metro buses are equipped with bike racks on the front and do not require a permit.
Metropath (M-Path)
The M-Path is a paved trail that follows under the elevated Metrorail and stretches from Dadeland South to Brickell Metrorail stations.
