What did you like most about your MPH/MSPH program?
What I liked most about this MPH program was its capacity to expose me to the varying aspects of public health and the opportunity to learn from faculty and fellow peers that come from diverse backgrounds and experiences.
How did your MPH prepare you for what you’re doing now?
This program provided the basic tools I needed to tackle the multifaceted issues of the health of vulnerable populations. Completing coursework in global health, biostatistics I & II, fundamentals of epidemiology, disease prevention & health, and research methods provided an essential foundation to understanding the challenges of research in these populations. In addition, my capstone allowed me to gain practical experience in interacting fields of biology, disease, and public health in a unique hands-on research experience.
What advice would you give to prospective and current MPH/MSPH students looking to do something similar to you?
My advice to prospective and current students that would like to pursue a career, job, or other opportunities in research is to get involved in as much as you can before graduating. Seek opportunities to work with faculty that are working on projects that interest you, identify mentors, and stay connected with the people in the communities you are aiming to help through Public Health Student Association. My time there was spent doing just that with Dr. Margaret Byrne, feeling out capstone opportunity with Dr. John Beier and doing community outreach with PHSA.
