How did your MPH or MSPH prepare you for what you’re doing now?
By speaking with professors and learning about the various projects going on, I landed a fantastic Capstone experience that provided me with a very hands-on experience to gain the skills necessary to give me confidence to enter the job market. The MPH program also ensures that you are constantly collaborating with classmates and presenting, both of which a large part of my current position.
Please provide a description of what you’re doing now and what you like best about it.
Working at UCLA is an amazing experience. I’m part of a university that has a vested interest in the community in which I’m from, and I get to be a part of that. As Associate Director of the CHIPTS’ Development Core, my roles are developing and submitting grants, publications and progress reports; assembling our Community Advisory Board, and forming collaborations with our community partners.
What advice would you give to prospective and current MPH/MSPH students looking to do something similar to you?
The MPH program is as good as you make it; take the time to make the connections and really hone in on your research and practical interests. The faculty and staff have excellent projects going on and it’s very fortunate that they are at your fingertips. I also could not advocate more for cold contacting! Search through the department and find someone whose work you are interested in and send them an email!
