I chose UM because of the diversity found in opportunities, faculty, and student populations.
My favorite part of the program is collaborating with fellow students and members of the community.
I was motivated to pursue a master's in public health after taking a social inequalities class during undergrad. I was determined to invoke change within our social systems, specifically the medical system, by addressing and finding solutions to disparities within communities.
On the medical campus, Calder library has been a great resource for navigating research and other academic concerns. Another resource I have utilized is the Toppel Career Center. They offer practice interviews for multiple positions which is helpful when preparing for medical school or a job search.
I became a DPHS Canes Student Ambassador to offer guidance to prospective students as well as highlight all that UM has to offer.
Along with being a Canes Ambassador, I am a member of PHSA and a regular volunteer for the DOCS fairs. I also am a research assistant with the Department of Neurology Stroke Division.
My overall career goal is to become a pediatric neuro-oncologist.
One thing I wish I would have known before starting graduate school is the importance of working ahead. The program moves quickly at times and establishing plans for courses, field experience, capstone projects, and other opportunities early is crucial.
I support my health and wellness by making sure I am eating regularly regardless of my schedule and finding 30 minutes of my day to do something I enjoy.
My favorite spot in campus is the fountain outside of the Lois Pope Center. The banyan tree is beautiful and it's a great spot to eat lunch or study.
My piece of advice is to be involved. Don't hesitate to join organizations or apply for positions!
I had never been to Miami before I moved here!
